Terms & Conditions

  • The essay competition is administered, promoted and run by Village Market;
  • The competition is open to children between the age group of 12-17 residing & schooling in Kenya;
  • The competition will run from 1st December 2019 to 31st January 2020. Late entries will not be accepted. Winners will be contacted in February 2020;
  • Guardians of the participants will be required to show the SMS or collateral document availed to them by the management as proof of participation; Only the winners will be contacted;
  • All essays submitted must be between 1000-1200 words; Essays less than 1000 words will not qualify;
  • Entries must be written in English, typed, and submitted using the online form found at www.villagemarket-kenya.com/essay-competition;
  • Entries must be submitted online to the instructions specified and will be acknowledged by a message once submitted. There will be no feedback on any entries, either during or after the competition;
  • The winning essay may be published in Village Market’s publication i.e The Village Beat Magazine;
  • The judges decision is final and not subject to appeal;
  • Winner will receive a banker’s cheque worth KES 50,000 addressed in their school’s name. The cheque can be used to cover part or full payment of the tuition fees;
  • The prize is not transferable and no part or parts of the prize may be substituted for other benefits, items or additions;
  • Entrants retain all rights to their entries, but taking part in the competition implies accepting that Village Market retains unlimited, non-exclusive rights to reproduction without further compensation. The winning essay submitted for the competition may be published by Village Market on the website and/or in the Village Market publication. There is no guarantee that the 1st prize winners’ essay, will be published by Village Market;
  • Village Market and its trustees reserve the right, at their sole and absolute discretion, to use names and information about participants without obtaining further consent from the participant or providing any payment whatsoever to the participant for any commercial or non-commercial endeavours, publicity, advertising, trade or promotion in perpetuity in relation to this campaign;
  • Village Market reserves the right to modify the format and content of essays for publication purposes;
  • Village Market will not be responsible or liable for any problem, loss or damage of whatsoever nature suffered by any party due to any delay and/or failure in submitting entries to the competition;
  • Village Market will not be responsible or liable for any costs, problems, damage or loss of whatsoever nature to the participants resulting from their participation in the competition;
  • Village Market reserves the right to disqualify any participant that they determine are submitting material that is deemed to be offensive;
  • Entry to the competition is deemed an acceptance of Village Market’s terms and conditions of use as posted on the website;
  • Entries must be original work by the entrant;
  • Any form of plagiarism will result in automatic disqualification. It is the responsibility of the participant to ensure that their essay does not infringe the copyright of any third party or any other laws and Village Market will not be held liable whatsoever;
  • Canvasing is not allowed; anyone found canvasing will be automatically disqualifed
  • By entering the competition, the entrants, including the winner, agree to allow the free use of their names, photographs and general locations for publicity and news purposes during this competition;
  • The winner’s name may be published on the website or Village Beat Magazine ;
  • Submission of an entry will be deemed acceptance of these terms and conditions;
  • Village Market reserves the right at any time to cancel, modify or supersede the competition (including altering the prize) if, in their sole discretion, the competition is not capable of being conducted as specified. Village Market reserves in their absolute discretion the right to substitute a prize of equal value in the event that circumstances beyond their control make this unavoidable;
  • Employees of Market Masters Ltd and their immediate family members or persons living in the same household are not eligible to participate;
  • Village Market shall not be responsible for delivery of the prize or any defects (e.g. delays, strikes, damage or loss) caused during delivery as may have been requested by the participant;
  • Village market shall not be held liable if the prize is collected or received by the participant’s kin or care-of custodian and/or steward;
  • This is not a game of chance;
  • Village Market has the mandate to change the Terms & Conditions without any notice;
  • The Village Market reserves all rights;
