Karura Forest Tree Planting and Seedling Give Away

The much anticipated tree planting conclusion coincided with The World Environment Day celebrations this year. The Great Getaway Giveaway Christmas Promotion that ran last year saw a lucky winner Mr. Joe Mugo receive an all expenses paid trip to the tropical holiday destination in The Maldives courtesy of The Village Market. Representatives from various Village Market Management departments, pupils from Karura Primary School, Cheleta Primary School in Runda, volunteers from the Global Shapers Organization, Kenya Forest Service and Friends of the Karura Forest undertook the first phase of the 9, 000 tree seedling plantation project.

The 3, 000 indigenous tree seedlings were planted as part of the gradual replacement of the exotic species along the family trail over the next three years. The initiative saw the Friends of Karura Forest receive Ksh. 600, 000 to nurture and maintain the tree seedlings for a period of one year until the next phase of planting in 2014.

The Village Market supports ‘Team 31’ Rhino Charge Participants

The Village Market management is proud to support ‘Team 31’ which consists of four off-road enthusiasts owning a historical car named ‘Lucy’ that successfully participated in the 2012 and 2013 Rhino Charge events. The team is made out of Guillelmo Miranda from Peru, Felix Rembold from Germany, Neel Shah from Kenya and Giuseppe Simeon from Italy. The team purchased the car from the German School of Kenya and lovingly made improvements to the car and is in good shape!

The Rhino Charge is an annual off road motorsport competition that has been held in Kenya since 1989. It is a unique and exciting competition that requires friendship, bravery and a high level of skill in off-road driving and navigation!  The event is organized by The Rhino Ark Charitable Trust and is held to raise funds for a very noble cause – conservation of Kenya’s Aberdare Ecosystem. In 2010 Rhino Ark announced its formal commitment to extend its support to the conservation of other critical ecosystems starting with Mau Eco-system, Mt. Eburu and Mt. Kenya.

The Rhino Charge is made possible by the kind support of many volunteers, event sponsors and raffle sponsors. The car is hosted over the weekends at the main entrance of The Village Market to fundraise towards the Rhino Ark project. Special thank you to Phoenix Safaris, German Point, Kingsway Tyres, Osteria restaurant and The Tribe Hotel.

Nancy Ellen Crooks Foundation

The Village Market’s Corporate Social Responsibility overall strategy centers on Art, Education, Environment and Health. In continuation of the various community projects supported by the management, The Village Market responded to the Nancy Ellen Crooks Foundation charity committed to supporting and implementing self sustaining projects that improve the lives of women and children in rural areas by donating KES 50,000 to the management trustees of the foundation. This would go towards the Lights for Learning Program which has provided 1,500 Kenyan families with clean and affordable solar lanterns since 2012.

It is estimated that roughly 3 million children try to complete their homework at night by light from the cooking fire or by a kerosene lantern as they are occupied with chores in the daylight hours after school. Academic performance is largely undermined in rural areas due to lack of proper and adequate lighting. Donations from well wishers support the NECF Lights for Learning Program, enabling school going children, in rural communities, to study in a safer and cleaner environment by providing affordable solar lanterns.

The CEO Charity Football Challange

As part of the activities during the six week festival around the World Cup, Village Market in collaboration with The German School hosted a charity football match dubbed CEO Charity Football Cup aimed at raising funds for the German School Football Center courtesy of Managing Directors and CEO’s in Corporate Kenya taking part in the friendly soccer match.

For four years, the German School hosted Ligi Ndogo, the Nairobi Small Football League.  When Ligi Ndogo reduced the number of their centers to three, the German School started their own Football Centre in January 2013.  The GSFC had quickly over 70 players, who play now in 7 teams covering the ages 5 to 14 years.  The objectives of the GSFC:

Provide children with the opportunity to spend part of their weekend in healthy action.Detect football talent in the School and its surroundings and foster it integrate the School into the local and international neighborhood.Supports sport activities for needy children. The GSFC offers training on its premises every Saturday morning from 9 to 12 am and at least one match for each team every month.  The trainer/player ratio of 1/10 allows intensive training for fitness and skills.  Apart from students of the German School also players from the surrounding villages and the international neighborhood are welcome, with the target of each group constituting about a third of all players.

In general the fee for one of the 3 seasons in a year is 6.000 KES.

The Action Foundation

The Action Foundation first met the team at The Village Market while planning an art camp for children living with disability in Kibera slums. The goal of the art camp was to give the children the rare opportunity to develop their self-esteem, social, motor and communication skills through art therapy and recreation, this project was wholly funded by The Village Market management. Through the food donations by The Village Market, The Action Foundation began a feeding program in the center which is currently operating with the parents who have organized themselves to volunteer on a rotational basis thus enabling them more time to seek employment opportunities elsewhere to support their families. The organization has seen remarkable growth in terms of members in need and thus requires support to provide two healthy and nutritious meals each year for the children at the center in the next year. Dry food items for instance rice, cooking oil, flour and grains can be donated at The Charity Zone at the food court for the center located in Kibera. The Village Market continues to give support to The Action Foundation through provision of space to sell jewelry and other items to raise money for the center to purchase diapers, stationery, food supplies and other items that are needed to cater to the children and their families. Recently, proceeds from The Village Market activation sales enabled children with disabilities undergo corrective surgery. For more information about the wor
